Idiazabal
Herding in Idiazabal has had a major social and economic importance during the course of its history. The cheese interpretation and tasting centre is there. In addition to learning about cheese production, you can do a cheese tasting at the centre.
In Idiazabal, the palaces from different periods are noteworthy, some of them were built by people who had made their fortune in the Americas in the early 20th century. The Txomenane park is a botanical treasure with 36 different kinds of trees from several continents planted by the Altolagirre family, and noble houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, the doorway of the San Miguel church, located in the centre of town, is one of the best doorways from the transition between Romanesque and Gothic in the Basque Country.
Mutiloa
This is a small village with a lot of natural and landscape values that give it personality. The urban area has the traditional structure of small villages with a rural tradition, among them the San Miguel church is notable. One of the most beautiful settings of this village is the Liernia neighbourhood, where you can find the hermitage with the same name, and where there are vigils for the Virgin Mary to preserve the health of children and the fertility of women following the old customs. There are beautiful views of the Aizkorri mountains from this neighbourhood.
On your visit to Mutiloa don’t miss the greenway that goes from the mines of Aizpea in Zerain to the Ormaiztegi train station. It’s 4.5 km long and follows the old mining train.
Zegama
Strategically located at the foot of mount Aizkorri, since antiquity it has been one of the main points of entry to the Aizkorri-Aratz natural park. The interpretation centre of the park and the Aizkorro IZ Gate located in the Anduetza baserri are in this town.
At the Anduetza baserri, the relationship the village of Zegama has had with the natural park is studied and interpreted, so visitors can learn about this idyllic setting where nature and culture converge.
Zerain
The residents of Zerain were citizens of Segura until 1615. At that time, they bought the right to be a village for 31,364 reales.
The area gives you an unbeatable opportunity to take unique walks through the rural environment. In the same village you can see the Jauregi house, the village church, the ethnographic museum, the 18th century jail and the area for playing Basque bowls,The hydraulic sawmill of Larraondo and Aizpea iron mountain an area where that mineral was mined from the 11th to the mid 20th century, are five minutes from the village. The mine facilities, located in a beautiful rural setting, can be visited.
