17th century
It was built in several phases thanks to private donations.
The nun Sor María Beatriz Antonia de Cristo Arrue lived in the convent and subsidised the construction of the church, new dormitories, halls, and cloister with help from her father. (Knight of the Order of Santiago who made a fortune in Quito, Ecuador)
The convent complex has a deep meaning in terms of building at the time.
The church has a Latin cross plan inside of a rectangle. The choir, divided into two parts, is at the back, and the church is closed with barrel vaults with lunettes, and the ribbed vaults are finished with dome vaults on pendentives.
Main Reredo: 18th century Baroque - Rococo Historic-Artistic Monument
The immaculate conception is the most noteworthy image in the group. Fray Jacinto Sierra and Fray Esteban López executed the work thanks to subsidies by Martin and Juan Antonio Lardizabal y Elorza, whose sisters Sor María de San José and Sor María Antonia de San Miguel lived here. The gilder and painter was José María Ansón from Zumarraga.
The last Franciscan Conceptionist nuns left the convent in 2022.
